DWV system: traps, vents, and why vents prevent trap-seal loss

One-line orientation

The drain-waste-vent (DWV) system carries wastewater out by gravity while keeping sewer gas out of the building — the exam tests how traps and vents work together and what happens when venting fails.

Key points

  • Trap: a U-shaped bend (the P-trap is most common, under sinks/showers/tubs) that retains a small plug of water — the trap seal — to block sewer gases from entering the room. A toilet has an integral trap, so it needs no separate P-trap.
  • Vent: admits air into the drainage system to keep pressure near atmospheric, which prevents siphoning of the trap seals as water flows past.
  • Why vents exist: without a vent, a draining fixture pulls a partial vacuum that siphons the trap seal out; the empty trap then lets sewer gas in. The vent breaks that suction.
  • Stack vocabulary (commonly confused):
    • Soil stack — vertical pipe carrying toilet waste (blackwater).
    • Waste stack — vertical pipe carrying sink/shower waste (greywater).
    • Vent stack — vertical air pipe, independent of the waste/soil stack (no stack below it).
    • Stack vent — the extension of a soil/waste stack above the highest drain, out the roof.
  • Slope: small horizontal drains commonly pitch about 1/4” per foot; code minimum slope varies by pipe diameter, so avoid treating 1/4”–1/2” per foot as one universal rule.
  • Cleanout: access fitting for clearing blockages, required at bends / stack bases / long runs (direction changes over ~45°).
  • greywater excludes toilet waste; whether kitchen, dishwasher, or laundry discharge is included depends on the jurisdiction.
