Sprinkler systems: wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge, and quick-response
One-line orientation
Sprinkler systems differ primarily in whether pipes hold water, pressurized gas, or nothing — and whether heads activate individually or all at once — matching the hazard level and freeze/damage risk of the occupancy.
Key points
- Wet pipe (most common): pipes permanently filled with water; each head activates independently when its thermal element reaches the trigger temperature. Immediate response. Cannot be used where pipes might freeze.
- Dry pipe: pipes filled with pressurized gas (air or nitrogen); heat opens a head, gas escapes, then water follows. Suitable for unheated spaces (loading docks, parking garages, unconditioned attics). Slightly slower response than wet pipe.
- Pre-action: in a common single-interlock system, a separate detection event opens the valve and fills the piping; water discharges only when a sprinkler head also opens. Other pre-action configurations use different interlocks. These systems protect water-sensitive spaces such as server rooms, museums, and archives.
- Deluge: pipes are open (no heat-sensitive element at each head); all heads discharge simultaneously when a detector triggers the deluge valve. Used in high-hazard occupancies where fire spreads faster than individual heads can respond (aircraft hangars, chemical plants, flammable-liquid areas).
- Quick-response sprinklers: quick-response describes the sprinkler head’s thermal response, not one universal occupancy or pipe system.

Quick-response is a faster sprinkler head, not a fifth pipe-system type. The preaction specimen shows the common single-interlock sequence.
