Fire-rated door assemblies (IBC 716)

One-line orientation

A fire door is an opening protective, and the whole assembly carries the rating. Its rating is usually lower than the wall rating. Remember the common pairing: a 90-minute door in a 2-hour wall. One major exception is a 3-hour fire wall, which takes a 3-hour door.

Key points

  • The assembly carries the rating — not just the leaf. Door leaf, frame, hardware (hinges, latch, closer), and glazing must all be rated and compatible. One non-rated component voids the assembly.
  • Opening protectives are usually rated lower than the wall. A fire door protects an opening; it is not a full continuation of the wall, so code assigns most doors a lower rating — but not always: a 3-hour fire wall requires a 3-hour door.
  • Classic pairing: a 2-hour wall takes a 90-minute (1½-hour) door.
  • Doors are rated in minutes/hours — e.g. 20, 45, 60, 90, 180 minutes — selected to suit the wall it serves.
  • Governing section: IBC 716 — requirements for fire-rated doors, frames, and hardware.
  • Glazing is restricted. Fire-rated glass is limited in size and type within a rated door.
