Closed-loop hydronic safety: relief valve and compression (expansion) tank
One-line orientation
Heated water expands inside a sealed hydronic loop. The expansion tank absorbs that normal change; the pressure relief valve opens only if pressure becomes unsafe.
Key points
- Pressure relief valve:
- Function: protects a closed-loop heating system from overpressure.
- Operation: automatically opens to discharge water or steam when pressure exceeds a preset threshold, then reseats — preventing damage to the boiler and piping.
- Placement: on the boiler or at the manufacturer-designated boiler safety tapping; do not frame this as “the top of the system” because static pressure is usually highest at low points.
- Compression tank (expansion tank):
- Function: absorbs the volume increase as water expands when heated, keeping loop pressure stable.
- Operation: contains an air pocket or bladder that compresses as the water expands.
- Placement: usually near the boiler, often shown on the return / pump-inlet side in study diagrams. The principle behind the location is the point of no pressure change: modern diaphragm-tank layouts pipe the circulator to pump away from the tank.
- Division of labor: the compression tank handles normal, expected expansion every cycle; the relief valve only acts as a fail-safe when pressure still climbs past the set limit.
