UL-rated assemblies and how they're specified

Fire ratings come from tested assemblies, not calculations — UL fire-tests complete assemblies for hourly fire resistance and publishes them as numbered designs (e.g. U419), and the architect’s job is to cite the right UL number, not re-derive the rating.
Key points
- UL tests whole fire-resistance assemblies. Underwriters Laboratories tests walls, floors, roofs, and similar building elements under standards such as UL 263 / ASTM E119, then publishes each as a documented, numbered design. Smoke leakage is a separate listing/test category, not something every fire-resistance design automatically covers.
- You cite, you don’t compute. The architect selects a UL design that meets the required rating and references its number in the drawings/specs — the rating is established by the test, not by the designer’s calculation.
- Example — U419. A non-load-bearing wall assembly documented by UL (metal studs, drywall layers, insulation, specific fasteners) used to deliver a required wall rating.
- What the UL document specifies: exact materials (drywall type/thickness, stud type), construction details (stud spacing, screw placement, number of layers), insulation, and installation guidance (taping, joint compound, supports).
- Consistent communication. One UL number lets architect, contractor, and code official reference the same tested spec — no duplicated testing or detailing.
- Deviation voids the listing. The rating belongs to the tested configuration; substituting materials or changing spacing/fasteners can forfeit the listed rating.

UL fire-resistance designs differ by the building element and tested configuration. Pick the family that matches your wall, floor/ceiling, roof/ceiling, beam, or column condition, then cite that design’s number.
