Single-zone vs multi-zone HVAC: when each applies

One-line orientation

The exam tests which HVAC zoning strategy fits the program — single-zone works for uniform spaces, multi-zone VAV for buildings with varied or independently controlled thermal loads.

Key points

  • Single-zone HVAC:

    • One thermostat, one AHU, one set of ductwork serving the entire conditioned area.
    • The whole zone heats or cools to the same setpoint simultaneously.
    • Best for: small or single-purpose spaces — individual rooms, small offices, boutique retail.
    • Advantage: simple design, low installation cost, easy operation.
    • Limitation: no flexibility — cannot heat one area while cooling another; poor fit for buildings with spatially diverse loads (e.g., south-facing perimeter vs interior core).
  • Multi-zone HVAC (VAV-based):

    • Multiple zones each receive conditioned air through VAV boxes — dampered terminal units that vary the volume of air reaching each zone.
    • Each zone has its own thermostat modulating its VAV damper independently.
    • Best for: large buildings with diverse space uses — office buildings with perimeter and interior zones, schools, hospitals, mixed-use programs.
    • Advantage: flexible, energy-efficient (only moves as much air as each zone needs), individual zone control.
    • Limitation: more complex design and installation; requires balancing; higher first cost.
    • Dual-duct is the older multi-zone approach: two supply ducts, one hot and one cold, mixed at each zone. It predates VAV as a way to give zones independent conditioning.
