HVAC components: dampers, filters, and energy recovery ventilators

One-line orientation

Dampers, filters, and ERVs are the three HVAC component families that appear most often in specification and selection questions — each governs a different aspect of system control, air quality, or energy efficiency.

Key points

Dampers

Dampers regulate airflow volume or direction within ductwork or at system boundaries (intake, exhaust, mixing).

  • Parallel blade dampers: all blades rotate in the same direction simultaneously.
    • Best for: on/off applications (fully open or fully closed), intake/exhaust isolation.
    • Limitation: less precise at intermediate positions; airflow is less uniform.
  • Opposed blade dampers: adjacent blades rotate in opposite directions (one opens as its neighbor closes).
    • Best for: modulating applications requiring precise airflow control (volume balancing, mixing-box control, VAV terminal dampers).
    • Produces a more uniform, linear flow characteristic.

Filters

Filters remove particulates from the air stream; type and rating affect air quality, pressure drop, and energy use.

  • Fibrous (MERV-rated) filters:
    • MERV = Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value; standard ASHRAE 52.2 scale is 1–16 (higher = finer filtration).
    • Higher MERV captures smaller particles (pollen, mold spores, fine dust) but increases resistance; a very high-MERV filter on an undersized fan starves airflow.
    • Available as disposable panels or reusable frames.
  • Electrostatic filters:
    • Particles acquire an electrostatic charge at the filter face and are attracted to oppositely-charged collector plates.
    • Advantage: lower pressure drop than comparable dense-media filter; effective on fine particles.
    • Requires periodic cleaning; powered electronic versions can produce trace ozone (a consideration for sensitive occupancies), while passive washable electrostatic filters do not intentionally ionize the air stream.
  • Charcoal (activated carbon) filters:
    • Adsorbs gases, VOCs, and odors onto the carbon surface rather than removing particles.
    • Used where air purity is critical (hospitals, labs, spaces with off-gassing materials).
    • Requires periodic replacement as the carbon becomes saturated.
    • Often combined with a MERV filter for both particle and gaseous contaminant removal.

Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs)

  • Function: ERVs exchange stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air while recovering heat and, with some exchangers, moisture. An enthalpy wheel transfers heat and moisture; an ordinary flat plate may transfer heat only.
    • In winter: cold incoming air is warmed by warm exhaust → reduces heating load.
    • In summer: hot incoming air is pre-cooled and dehumidified by cool exhaust → reduces cooling load.
  • Three benefits: fresher air, lower heating and cooling loads, and better humidity control when the exchanger transfers moisture.
  • ERV vs HRV: an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) transfers heat only; an ERV transfers both heat and moisture. ERVs are preferred in climates where moisture management matters.
